Can I install the Oxford tile over my acoustic tiles?  In other words, I want to leave the acoustic tiles in place and just install these tiles over them.

Asked by: Jan
The "square within a square" pattern of the Oxford projects upward 1/2" from the top of the tile. Ceilume doesn't recommend installing a mineral fiber tile on top of a full sized Oxford tile because the weight of that tile will be concentrated on the upward projecting pattern and may cause the Oxford tile to bow down slightly. Please click the following link to view all of the tiles that can be installed beneath a mineral fiber tile: https://www.ceilume.com/products/refacing/2x2/white-ceiling-tiles/ Please give Ceiume a call at 800-557-0654 to request a free full-sized sample to make sure it will work for your intended installation method. We're here Monday - Friday from 7:00 am - 4:30 pm PST.

Is this the same as the Cambridge tile just flipped over?  Can the Cambridge tile be flipped over to have the same look as the Oxford?  Any issues installing the Cambridge this way?

Asked by: AletaL
You are correct! The Oxford is an inverted Cambridge. Since the design of the Cambridge tile projects down from the ceiling, it can only be installed as a full 2x2 tile in a ceiling grid. Since most ceilings don't lay out to a perfect 2x2 grid, there are usually tiles around the perimeter of the room that must be cut. When you cut a Cambridge and try to install it in a ceiling grid, that downward facing design prevents the tile from sitting flush in the grid. Flipping the Cambridge over allows the tile to sit flush in the grid while continuing the "square within a square' pattern and there are no issues with installing a Cambridge in this fashion. Flipping a cut Cambridge tile over works for our standard colors (white, sand, merlot, latte, and black) because those colored tiles are a uniform color on the front and back. But the Faux Metallic and Faux Wood finishes are only finished on one side. We've developed the Oxford for use as a border tile to the Cambridge in those 2 finish groups.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easiest part of my reno I had a nightmare renovation with my living room turned creative studio; my drop ceiling got water damage so I needed to replace it. I teamed up with Ceilume and they gifted me the tiles. I wasn't expecting it to be an easy job but it really was; I was able to cut all of my tiles using a pair of old heavy duty sewing scissors and I cut the holes for my lights using a razor knife. The lights in my ceiling were can lights but since they already had wood crossbars in them all I had to do was cut a circle in the tile and fit them right in. They look great and updated my space, this one specifically is a heavier duty tile than some of the others which I really liked about it- harder to cut but worth it in stability. It is nice too that these are plastic so if there ever is another water issue I wouldn't have to replace the entire ceiling, I'd just have to clean them. Easy, looks great, I'd recommend them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow; highly recommend Same as my review for the Madison tile with the same pics. The Oxford was used as the border tiles for the proper finished look per the guidance of Ryan at Ceilume. It’s a simple way to upscale any room.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! This is our second job with Ceilume, Total 6,500 sq. ft. so far. I'm delighted with the product quality, and the customer service. We will be buying more soon for the net phase of this commercial building.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Elegance I'll come right out and say it: I am a klutz. But even so, I was able to replace my old tiles with the Ceilume Oxford Ceiling tiles and have a result that looks elegant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ceiling looks great. Easy to use product Our basement was finished by the previous owners of our home. They installed acoustic ceiling tiles, which after several years yellowed and chipped. I was looking at hiring a professional to redo the ceiling when I found Ceilume. My husband and I did the ceiling ourselves, and we are not even that handy. We were able to slide the Oxford tiles right under the pre-existing acoustic tile. Our biggest challenges were cutting around can lights and a couple support poles and sewer pipes. It took some measuring, and we did screw up a tile here or there, but the ceiling looks great. We also ordered the snap on grid covers which look really nice and were easy to use. A couple tips: 1) Order a couple extra tiles in case you screw one up while measuring and cutting; 2) Order the recommended aviation snips on the Ceilume website. Regular scissors will not easily cut the Oxford tiles. I ended up using heavy duty tin snips (Stanley Fat Max), but I think the aviation snips would have made the job easier and prevented sore hands. We really love our new ceiling. It looks great!
