What Tools and Materials Do I Need, and How Do I Calculate How Many Tiles or Grid Pieces to Buy?
Tools are minimal, whether you're installing drop-in or glue-up ceiling tiles (Not sure which you need? See our guide: Drop-in vs. Glue-up - Which Tiles Do I Need?), and calculating how many to buy just takes a quick bit of math.
Tools You'll Need
- Pencil and tape measure
- Scissors or snips
- Chalk line (glue-up only)
- Safety glasses (you're cutting and working overhead)
Materials Checklist
- Tiles (obviously)

Drop-in:
- Grid - main tees, cross tees, and wall angle
- Grid covers to renew an old grid (optional)

Glue-up:
- Adhesive (one tube covers about six 2' x 2' tiles)
- Joint strips to cover tile seams
- Damp rag for cleanup
Quick Tile Math
Multiply your room's length by its width to get the square footage. Divide that figure by your tile's coverage (4 sq. ft. for 2' x 2' tiles, 8 sq. ft. for 2' x 4' panels) then add 10% for cuts and waste.
(Length × Width) ÷ Tile Coverage × 1.1 = Total Tiles Needed
Example:
A 10' x 10' room (100 sq ft) needs about (28) 2' x 2' tiles or (14) 2' x 4's.
Need adhesive? Divide your tile count by 6 for a rough estimate.
For the example above, (28) 2' x 2' tiles works out to about 5 tubes. Grab an extra tube if you're cutting a lot of edges.

What About Grid Pieces?
Grid pieces follow their own logic: cross tees typically run on 2-foot centers to match standard tile sizes, main tees span the room perpendicular to those, and wall angle is measured by your room's perimeter. That's the general shape of it, but exact counts depend on your specific room's dimensions, tee spacing, and how the border works out, which isn't something to eyeball by hand or approximate with a rule of thumb.
