Pass Through Sprinkler Heads

July 12, 2004 Technical Bulletin

This technical bulletin applies to you if (and only if) both of the following are true:

You have installed fire suppression sprinkler heads that come "through" your Ceilume tiles so that the sprinkler heads are visible in the room.

AND...

You have used trim rings or cosmetic bezels around your sprinkler heads, or installed the sprinklers themselves in a fashion that may limit the tiles' ability to release from the ceiling and fall in the event of a fire.

If you have not used trim rings or cosmetic bezels around your sprinkler heads that would limit the tiles' ability to release from the ceiling and fall in the event of a fire, then this bulletin does not apply to you.

If you have installed sprinkler heads through your Ceilume tiles, and have used trim rings or cosmetic bezels around your sprinkler heads that could limit the tiles' ability to release and fall from the grid in the event of a fire, then this bulletin does apply to you.

Please be aware that:

Trim rings or cosmetic bezels around your sprinkler heads may prevent ceiling tiles from falling from the grid and, in such instances, the tiles may impede sprinklers' spray patterns.

If these conditions apply to you, you must modify your installation to comply with the installation instructions sent with your ceiling tiles, which clearly states: "No clips, fasteners or impediments of any kind can be used to limit the ceiling tiles' ability to drop from the suspension system without restraint in the event of a fire."

This can be accomplished by completing any of the following:

  • Remove trim rings or bezels so that ceiling tiles are free to fall from the grid in the event of a fire.
  • Cut around the perimeters of trim rings or bezels so that they no longer restrain the ceiling tiles' ability to fall from the grid in the event of a fire.
  • Use mineral fiber tiles, per manufacturer's specifications, in those grids where sprinklers pass through ceiling tiles.
  • Reposition the sprinkler heads above ceiling tiles, per Ceilume's UL Approval for ceiling tiles beneath sprinklers, and with the approval of your local building and fire officials.

Please note that trim rings or bezels around recessed lighting fixtures are acceptable as long as they are not installed in the same ceiling tile as a sprinkler head.
