About Border Ceiling Tiles

What Are Border Ceiling Tiles?

Whether using glue-up ceiling tiles or drop ceiling tiles and ceiling panels, almost every installation will require some tiles or panels that are less than full size. Often needed where the ceiling meets the walls or around decorative features like columns, these border tiles (also referred to as filler tiles or edge trim tiles) not only perform an important practical function, they create an accent area that provides the perfect complementary frame for your full sized feature tiles.

Do I Need Them?

Does every situation require special border tiles? Not at all. If you are using low-profile, reasonably flush mount tiles throughout your ceiling and they can simply be trimmed as needed at the edges, the installation will look great. But if you have selected a more dramatic, three dimensional style for your feature tiles, like a deeply recessed coffer or a pronounced medallion, then a complementary border tile is a must. Why? Because the three dimensional features that make your feature tile so interesting and appealing simply won't trim out cleanly in a glue-up ceiling installation or lay cleanly at the edges of a drop ceiling grid.

Frame Your Ceiling

To gain maximum visual effect from your border tiles be sure to pre-plan your ceiling layout so the border area is as nearly uniform as possible at all the ceiling edges. You also want to give yourself enough border area to provide the desired contrast and proportion with the main ceiling, generally no less than 25% the width of the individual feature tiles. And, most importantly, select a border style that complements and supports the main ceiling theme.

Think of your ceiling as a design canvas, treat the border tile area as its frame, and the finished project is sure to be picture perfect.
