About 2 x 4 Ceiling Panels

The Workhorse

The contractor grade, 2ft. x 4ft., white, mineral fiber ceiling panel became the de facto standard for drop ceiling use in the middle of the last century. Based on sheer square footage installed, it is still the most widely seen panel in large, public installations. The reasons for this popularity are clear, and can be summed up in two words: cost and convenience.

Commercial Grade 2 x 4 Ceiling Panels Mass produced in extraordinary volumes often by companies that also manufacture gypsum board (sheet rock and drywall), contractor grade 2' x 4' ceiling panels provide an inexpensive interior finish and easy access to the messy infrastructure concealed above the suspended ceiling T-bar grid. While this engineering and maintenance solution is elegant, the esthetics of these ceilings are often anything but.

Fortunately, the dull uniformity of those drab rectangles is no longer inescapable. In fact, without sacrificing cost or convenience it is now possible to add character and even class to any room with a 2' x 4' suspended ceiling.

Hip to Be Square

2 x 4 Ceiling Panels Huey Lewis had it right, he just didn't know he was singing about suspended ceilings! Visually there is almost nothing intrinsically appealing about the 2' x 4' rectangular shape of a ceiling panel; the panel is there to do a job and that's just what it looks like. But turn that 2ft. x 4ft. panel into two 2ft. x 2ft. tiles and everything changes. Suddenly, instead of a rectangle you have a square - a geometric shape that can create patterns as pleasing to the eye today as they were to mosaic artisans 4,000 years ago.

2 x 4 Ceiling Panels The conversion from "ceiling panel" to "ceiling tile" is much easier than you might think. Many 2' x 4' ceiling panels are now available in designs that actually emulate the look of two 2' x 2' ceiling tiles. That's right, making no changes whatsoever to an existing 2ft. x 4ft. drop ceiling grid, it is possible to convert to the look of 2'x 2' ceiling tiles simply by adding these new "2 up" designs. Some are even available for lay-under application, so you don't even need to remove the existing contractor panels. Just slide the new decorator panels under the old ones, and the ceiling is transformed.

The 2' x 4' suspended ceiling panel was invented because there was a job to do, and it does that job well. Now, whether you choose a modern 2ft. x 4ft. ceiling panel design or a panel that looks like two 2ft. x 2ft. tiles, that 2' x 4' suspended ceiling can finally do the job in style.
